Liposuction or liposculpture is a surgical technique that reshapes the silhouette by removing accumulated fat deposits in unwanted places. These deposits of fat are called lipodystrophy. These fat deposits accumulate in different parts of the body and they tend to be refractory or resistant to conventional weight loss techniques as diet and exercise.

Although we have all surely heard of liposuction, in reality many of us may be confused as to what its primary purpose is. Although some surgeons promote and say otherwise, liposculpture or liposuction is not a method of weight loss. Rather, it is precise and delicate surgical body contouring procedure to correct the excess fat deposits,  localized usually in the waist, flanks, abdomen, thorax, back, arms, thighs, hip, knees, and/or ankles in order to restore the silhouette of the body and obtain a more proportioned and slenderer figure.

Liposuction is not a simple fat removal procedure. Knowledge, surgical experience, and an artistic notion are required.

“We ensure that our liposuction patients are appropriate candidates for the procedure. Then we work to remove the accurate quantities of excess fat from unwanted places in order to obtain natural, harmonious, and long-lasting results.”  – Dr. Victor Astudillo.

Dr. Astudillo uses the innovative SAFELipo ™ technique (Separation-Aspiration-Fat Equalization), described by Dr. Simeon Wall Jr. from the United States. This technique has gained much popularity due to its excellent results and its ability to minimize the risk of developing irregularities in the postoperative period.

How long is the procedure?

This procedure takes between one to two hours, and may take longer if combined with other body contouring procedures.

What type of anesthesia is used during a liposuction/liposculpture?

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that must be performed in an operating room with all of the required equipment, safety considerations and staff of trained medical professionals.. Patients may be discharged the same day, or stay overnight in our prestigious hospital, Clinica Latino. It is an operation performed under general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. Safety of the patient is always our priority, so a certified anesthesiologist is in the operating room at all times.

Who is a good candidate for liposuction/liposculpture?

The first step is to schedule a personalized consultation at STIMA, during which Dr. Víctor Astudillo will perform a thorough examination and medical evaluation in a personalized consultation. After doing so, Dr. Astudillo will determine if the patient is a good candidate for this surgical procedure. The ideal candidate should have a good overall health and be close to their ideal weight. The ideal patient must be committed to maintaining a healthy lifestyle in terms of diet and exercise after the procedure.

It is important to note that liposuction permanently eliminates fat deposits in the treated areas, Liposuction is not a weight lost method, but rather a procedure to finalize weight lost efforts. It is used to eliminate localized fat deposits that do not respond to diet or exercise.

A good candidate for liposculpture or liposuction should have good skin tone and elasticity to ensure a smooth result.  Good muscle tone and skin elasticity is essential for the re-attachment process. If skin elasticity is poor, removing fat will create an unsatisfactory aesthetic result. Even the best liposuction surgeon in the world can’t create skin elasticity where none exists, in this patients for optimal results, Liposuction and Tummy tack are often perform together.y
